Skaters rumble through downtown parking garage

Sunday, May 11, 2014 | 7:57 p.m. CDT
Parkside Skateshop's Garage Games featured contests and prizes for skateboarders. Attendees got to skate the fifth through ninth floors of the Fifth and Walnut Street parking garage, which is normally prohibited to skateboarders. The city granted Parkside permission to use the structure from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

COLUMBIA — A sound like rolling thunder echoed through the Fifth and Walnut Street parking garage Sunday as dozens of skateboarders raced down the 10-story structure.

They gathered in the parking garage — where skateboarding is ordinarily forbidden — to compete in Parkside Skateshop’s Garage Games. The city granted Parkside permission to use the ninth through fifth floors from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Although the Garage Games included contests and prizes, the atmosphere was more convivial than competitive. Attendees cheered loudly and joked often.
