COLUMBIA — Tuesday was full of emotions for Columbia College softball — mixed emotions.
The Cougars beat Morningside (Iowa) College 6-5 in their first elimination game of the afternoon in the opening round of the NAIA Tournament. Hours later, they saw their season end with a 4-2 loss to Central Methodist University, the No. 2 seed.
Central Methodist beat Columbia 12-2 on Monday.
"They're a solid team," Columbia junior Tiffany Urwiler said. "They just ended up on top this time."
The Cougars, seeded No. 3 in the NAIA Tournament, finish 31-18.
But the first thought that Urwiler had was not about any of those 18 losses.
"We're losing six seniors," she said.
Kristin Eiken, Marli Hayes, Taylor Richter, Whitni Howell, Hanna Taylor and Jamie Holmes hugged their teammates after the game. Though, nobody said much. They all knew what the loss meant.
Richter pitched a complete game for the Cougars in her final game for Columbia, giving up four runs on seven hits in the loss.
