Rene Lopez-Espinoza, 34, of Columbia was pronounced dead at the scene, and Richard Nelson, 60, of Hallsville was taken to University Hospital for serious injuries.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said Lopez-Espinoza was driving north on Route B in a 2003 Ford Mustang when he drifted off the right side of the road. He over-corrected, traveled across the center line and collided with Nelson, who was driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla, according to the highway patrol's crash report.

The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 6:42 a.m. and arrived a few minutes later. They found one vehicle upright in the roadway and one off the roadway, according to a news release from the fire department.

Lopez-Espinoza was pronounced dead at 6:49 a.m., according to the highway patrol's report. Both vehicles are totaled.
