Fire engulfs apartment attic; no injuries

The Columbia Fire Department responds to a two-alarm fire Thursday in the attic of an apartment building off South Providence Road.

COLUMBIA – Fire engulfed the attic of a two-story apartment building at 2501 S. Providence Road on Thursday.

The Columbia Fire Department received a call at 3:25 p.m. from a construction worker who noticed flames coming from the top of the building, according to a Columbia Fire Department news release.

Crews arrived at the building and began fighting the blaze at 3:30 p.m. A second alarm was sounded at 3:35 p.m. Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control in 25 minutes.

Six fire engines, one ladder truck, one airtruck and one rescue squad responded to the fire.

No injuries were reported in what was determined to be an electrical fire, according to a Fire Department news release. Officials estimate the fire caused $450,000 in damage..
