Saturday, May 31, 2014 | 10:50 p.m. CDT

COLUMBIA — Battle High School junior sprinter Ben Brooks made history for a freshly minted school Saturday.

Brooks became the first individual in school history to win a state title with a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash. He finished 1/100th of a second ahead of the second-place sprinter.

Brooks was the only Spartan to finish in the top eight at the state meet at Dwight Reed Stadium at Lincoln University in Jefferson City. He also gave Battle, which opened in fall 2013, a state championship in its first season of athletic competition.

Brooks also finished eighth in the 200-meter dash.
