Army veteran Danny Griggs enjoyed coaching softball, baseball

COLUMBIA — Danny Ray Griggs of Hallsville died Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Boone Hospital Center. He was 68.

Mr. Griggs was born March 10, 1946, in Boone County to Alfred Lemuel and Laura Lillian (Crane) Griggs.

He married Martha Sue Black on July 26, 1968, in Pierpont.

He served in the Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1967. For his service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Combat Medical Badge, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Mr. Griggs worked for the Columbia Fire Department for 22 years. He then worked for the Centralia and Hallsville school systems, retiring from Hallsville School District in 2012 after 18 years of service.

Mr. Griggs enjoyed coaching softball and baseball in Hallsville, and he loved working with kids. He cherished time with his grandchildren.

Mr. Griggs is survived by his wife; a son, Kevin Griggs, of Hallsville; a daughter, Kimberly Huang and her husband, Fon, of Springfield; four grandchildren, Alyssa, Hannah, Chloe and Jackson Huang of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.

Three sisters and three brothers died earlier.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the same location. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
