Gloria Niewoehner dedicated life to community, traveled to 49 states

COLUMBIA – Gloria "Tommie" E. Niewoehner died Wednesday, June 25, 2014. She was 87.

She was born Jan. 25, 1927, in Wardell to William W. and Bessie Mercer.

She married Carl H. Niewoehner in March 1951.

She graduated from the University of Tennessee-Memphis and embarked on a career as an X-ray technician working in Austin, Texas, New Orleans and the Ellis Fischel Cancer Research Center in Columbia.

She is remembered as a woman with compassion and a can-do attitude, which showed through her participation and volunteer work in giving back to the community of Columbia. She worked at Oakland Christian Church, the Lenoir Retirement Center, American Legion Auxiliary, Mid-Missouri Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, United Way, Voluntary Action Center and Koinonia House.

Mrs. Niewoehner and her husband took annual family trips to Canada for almost 50 years, where they camped and fished on the lakes south of Hudson Bay. They traveled to 49 states and all of the Canadian provinces in their motor home. For their 25th wedding anniversary, Mrs. Niewoehner and her husband took their first cruise.

Mrs. Niewoehner is survived by her husband, Carl; a son, Eric, of Juneau, Alaska; three grandchildren, Rachel Epler, Kaitlin and Sean; two sisters, Lautain Scruggs of Atlanta, and Janette Kornman of New Orleans; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Niewoehner donated her body to the MU School of Medicine for research. Her cremated remains will be interred at the Jacksonville Veterans Cemetery, 1479 County Road 1675, Jacksonville, MO 65260.

*A memorial celebrating the life of Gloria E. "Tommie" Niewoehner will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Oakland Christian Church, with the Rev. Greg Robinson conducting the service. A gathering in the Fellowship Hall will follow, with light refreshments served.
