POPLAR BLUFF — The president of Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff says he is resigning.

Devin Stephenson told the college's Board of Trustees on Wednesday that he was resigning to pursue other opportunities in higher education. He asked to be placed on sabbatical leave immediately until Nov. 30. He said he would be a consultant until that day, when his contract could be terminated.

The Poplar Bluff Daily American Republic reports that Stephenson's announcement caught the trustees by surprise.

Vice president for learning Wes Payne was named interim president, for a probationary period expected to last until November or December.

The resignation comes as the college has major construction projects underway at two campuses and must make $673,000 in budget cuts for the next fiscal year because of reductions in state funding.
