COLUMBIA — Missouri football players Markus Golden and Marcus Murphy are gaining national attention less than two months away from the beginning of their final college season.
The two seniors were named to the preseason watch lists for national awards, the school announced Monday. Golden, a defensive end from St. Louis, is one of 76 players on the list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to the nation's top defensive player; Murphy, a running back from DeSoto, Texas, is on the list for the Paul Hornung Award — given to college football's most versatile player.
As a junior, Golden made 55 tackles (including 13 for loss) and 6.5 sacks. He also intercepted a pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown against Toledo.
Murphy was an All-SEC Second Team selection as a junior, accumulating a team-best 1,425 all-purpose yards. He also had 10 touchdowns.
The Tigers open their season at home against South Dakota State on Aug. 30.
