Boone County Fair to feature dog show, dock jumping

Thursday, July 17, 2014 | 6:00 a.m. CDT; updated 7:10 a.m. CDT, Thursday, July 17, 2014

COLUMBIA — With wagging tails and perky ears, this year's fair will appeal to the softer side of Boone County.

The 2014 Boone County Fair will still incorporate all the traditional fair favorites, like the Demolition Derby, the Truck and Tractor Pull competition and the livestock shows. But this year's fairgoers can also enjoy a dog show hosted by the Boone County 4-H Club and the Big Muddy DockDogs jumping competition.

"The 4-H kids always hold their dog show off-campus," fair President Jeff Cook said. "It's been a long time since they've participated in the Boone County Fair."

Dog show participants can compete in two shows, one that showcases sportsmanship and another that features obedience classes.

In the dock diving competition, divers will jump off a dock into a 24-by-50-foot swimming pool; the dogs that jump the farthest will win up to $50 in cash prizes. Cook said competitors from five Missouri border states, plus Texas and South Carolina will be participating.

The dog show will take place Tuesday and Saturday, and the dock diving competition will be held Wednesday through Saturday. The remainder of the fair schedule is listed below.

Prices are $5 on Tuesday and $10 Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is free for children younger than 6.

Carnival prices are $15 per wristband with the exception of Tuesday and Saturday, which feature "Buddy Night," where patrons will receive a buy-one-get-one-free deal. Saturday's "Buddy Night" will have wristbands starting at $20.

All events will take place at the Central Missouri Events Center, 5212 N. Oakland Gravel Road, unless otherwise specified.
