Thursday, July 17, 2014 | 4:16 p.m. CDT

UPDATE: This story has been updated to include the victim's name and additional comments from Detective Tom O'Sullivan.

COLUMBIA — A shooting on Wagon Trail Road left one dead Wednesday night, Boone County Sheriff's Department Detective Tom O'Sullivan said.

A department news release identified the victim as Jon M. Chalfant, 47.

Authorities responded to reports of shots fired at 6120 Wagon Trail Road around 7 p.m. Wednesday, O'Sullivan said.

A  36-year-old woman was taken into custody as a suspect but was released after questioning produced no probable cause for arrest, O'Sullivan said Thursday. O'Sullivan said the woman was at the scene during the shooting, but he said he could not divulge any details of her account.

The Sheriff's Department has not released any information about the relationship between Chalfant and the woman who was questioned.

O'Sullivan said he thought the weapon used in the shooting had been recovered. The case was under investigation.
