Marcella G. Esterly, Dec. 3, 1916 — Aug. 21, 2014, of Columbia

Marcella G. Esterly, 97, passed away August 21 in Columbia, Mo. She was born December 3, 1916, in Carthage, Mo., the daughter  Mr. and Mrs. James H. Gilbreath. She attended Carthage public schools, Ozark Jr. College and the Kansas City Art Institute. On July 12, 1936 she married Alber C. "Deac" Esterly, also of Carthge. The couple settled in Springfield, Mo. He preceded her in death in 1988. Also preceding her in death were brothers, James and Marvin Gilbreath and sisters, Amelia Beimdeck and Evelyn Adamson. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret and husband Phil Spudich of Columbia, Mo. and daughter, Lynn Esterly of Hawi, Hawaii. In addition she leaves behind four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. 

Mrs. Esterly was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield, and a volunteer in their Next to New Shop since its founding in 1957. She also served the community as a volunteer on several boards, including the American Cancer Society, Springfield Art Museum and the Governor's Advisory Council for Comprehensive Health Planning.
She loved playing bridge and even more, she loved entertaining her extended family and wide circle of friends in her lovely home. She was always ready for "a brand new party." Her quick wit and keen sense of humor brought joy and laughter to all those around her.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Springfield on Monday, September 8, 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested contributions may be made to the A.C. Esterly Architectural Scholarship at Drury Univ., Hospice Compassus or the donor's favorite charity.
