COLUMBIA — Shirley Jean Johnson was the core of a tight-knit family and a dedicated employee.

Mrs. Johnson died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014. She was 75.

She was born Nov. 1, 1938.

Mrs. Johnson's daughter Sherre Mullins said it is the little things that come to mind when she thinks of her mother: browsing garage sales, sharing quiet moments watching TV and going to church together.

"She was a strong woman," Sherre Mullins said.

Mrs. Johnson always made it a priority to attend church and teach her children about faith. "I always admired her for her strength and her love for the Lord," Sherre Mullins said.

Her affection for people poured out beyond the sanctuary and into her community, her son-in-law Scotty Mullins said.

"You would be hard-pressed to find someone in Columbia who had not been touched by her," he said.

Mrs. Johnson worked at Shelter Insurance for 32 years as an executive secretary before Parkinson's disease prompted her to take an early retirement.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her three children, Sherre Mullins, Terry Johnson and Chad Johnson, all of Columbia; and her grandchildren Jade Epperson, Cole Epperson, Breanna Johnson, Corey Johnson, Emily Johnson, Dakota Johnson and Austin Johnson.

Her husband, Wayne Johnson, died earlier.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will follow at noon at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at MichaelJFox.org.
