John Barnes, formerly of Columbia, dies at 91

COLUMBIA — John T. Barnes Jr., 91, formerly of Columbia, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2014, in Wichita, Kan.

Mr. Barnes was born in Hallsville. on Sept. 14, 1922, to John and Virginia  Barnes. He married Mae Doty in Little Rock, Ark., on Jan. 16, 1943.

Mr. Barnes served in the U.S. Army in France during World War II. He later graduated from MU with a bachelor of science in agriculture. He also worked for the Missouri Farmers Association and Shelter Insurance.

Mr. Barnes is survived by two children, John T. Barnes III and his wife, Shirley, of Wichita, Kan., and Robert Gene Barnes and his wife, Susan, of Fair Grove; two grandchildren, Jason Lee Barnes and his wife, Rachel, of Springfield and Shanyn Mae Barton of Fair Grove; and two great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Kaylin Barton of Fair Grove.

His wife, Mae Doty, died earlier.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, followed by a burial at Memorial Park Cemetery.
