A Columbia man who called for help from police early Wednesday was arrested several minutes later on suspicion of trying to rob the Fast Lane Convenience Store at 520 Hinton Road.

Boone County Sheriff’s Sgt. Lance Robbins said in a prepared statement that deputies were dispatched to the 400 block of Hinton Road at 2:36 a.m. Wednesday after receiving a call from 18-year-old Matthew F. Bruce, who said he was “really messed up” and in need of police.

The deputies were responding to that call when they were rerouted to the nearby Fastlane at 2:42 a.m. Robbins said in his statement that a disturbance could be heard in the background when the robbery report was phoned in, and that there was mention of a weapon being involved.

Deputies arrived at the convenience store a minute later. Based on their investigation at the scene, they arrested Bruce, the original caller, on suspicion of attempted robbery, Robbins said.
