A family affair

Running a business with relatives works, say G&D Pizza & Steak owners

Running a restaurant can be a hard job. There is staff to manage, a building to maintain, food to prepare and customers to please. It can be a difficult task to take on by one’s self. However, picking a business partner can also be a challenge. For brothers Pano and Alex Terzopoulos, taking over G&D Pizza & Steak together seemed like a logical choice. Their uncle George Terzopoulos originally opened the restaurant at 2010 W. Broadway in 1977. He had also opened G&D Steakhouse at 2001 W. Worley St. in 1971.

“The best part about working with my brother and other members of our family is that I can count on them. We have the same work ethic and the same values. Everyone is working for a common good, and we all want to do things the right way,” co-owner Pano Terzopoulos said.

Though many staff members are hired from outside the family, one can almost always find a Terzopoulos around somewhere.

“My brother Alex or I are always here, and our family helps out as they are needed. Our parents help out when they can, but they come and go to Greece a lot. Other family members, like our wives, aunts and uncles, come and work when we need them. My children are still young, but someday they will help out, too,” Pano Terzopoulos said.

For some people, working with their family might be more of a headache than a positive experience, but not for the Terzopoulos family.

“I think that a family-run business provides more balance, and the benefits of working with my family heavily outweigh the disadvantages,” Terzopoulos said.
