Four Mid-Missouri errors led to four unearned runs and a 9-4 loss to Gateway on Wednesday at GMC Stadium in Sauget, Ill.

Mid-Missouri starter Justin Wiedmeyer lasted three-plus innings, giving up seven hits and seven runs, four earned. He struck out four. His Gateway counterpart, Brandon Smith, picked up the victory with eight solid innings. Smith gave up five hits and struck out eight Mavericks.

The Mavericks (12-44) took an early lead when Eric Darjean walked, stole second and scored on a pair of balks, giving Mid-Missouri a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Gateway scored three runs in the second, but Mid-Missouri tied the game at 3 in the third on a two-run home run by Thomari Story-Harden.

The Grizzlies responded with one run in the third and three more in the fourth – on a three-run home run by Jimmy Reiter – to grab a 7-3 lead.

Gateway added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Chad Sterbens drove home the Mavericks’ final run on a single to left field in the ninth.
