Title: Blue Skies

Artist: Julie Hansen

About the artist: Nature, landscapes and especially the skies inspire Julie Hansen’s work.

“On my errands, I pay a lot of attention to the land and the sky. I observe,” she said. The sky is her favorite subject.

“When I see one, I say, look at that!”

Her focus during school was drawing and painting, but it wasn’t until her graduation with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from MU that she began to explore pastels.

While working in Overland Park, Kan., Hansen was influenced by the work of an Atlanta artist. The medium: pastel.

“It attracted me because it was so expressive,” Hansen said. “It’s such a mix between drawing and painting.”

Hansen recently left her job at Prairie Brook Arts as a gallery manager to focus full time on her own art. She also plans to go back to school to pursue a master’s degree in fine arts.

“I’d love to teach at the college level,” she said.

Hansen lives in Kansas City but makes frequent trips to Columbia to sell her work. Pieces of her work are on sale at Poppy, 914 E. Broadway.

About the work: Hansen produced this work in September 2003. This pastel piece is not of one particular sky, but Hansen said it comes from her visual memory. Hansen said her work doesn’t come from one particular place but from a collection of memories and the feelings they create.

“A lot of my pieces are inspired by my drives to Columbia and back,” she said.
