Scrappy Kewpies lose in 1st round

The Hickman girls’ basketball team lost to Blue Valley (Kan.) North 51-35 in the opening round of the Blue Springs/Blue Springs South McDonald’s Tournament. The Kewpies trailed 20-15 at halftime, but Blue Valley North pulled away in the second half. Lauren Nolke led the Kewpies (2-5) with 10 points.

“We tried to do some things to get back in the game,” coach Tonya Mirts said. “They capitalized on our press. They broke pressure and converted it into layups that made the game more spread out.”

Hickman will play either Blue Springs South or Kansas City Center at 4 p.m. Thursday in the tournament.

MU FOOTBALL: Defensive tackle Atiyyah Ellison was selected to play in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. Ellison had 60 tackles, 12 1/2 for loss this season and was voted first-team All-Big 12 Conference by the coaches.

He will be the first Tiger since Rob Riti in 2000 to play in the Senior Bowl. The Senior Bowl will be televised on ESPN at 2 p.m. on January 29.

Wide receiver/punt returner Thompson Omboga will play in the Las Vegas All-American Classic on January 22. Omboga caught 39 passes for 392 yards this season and averaged 12.4 yards on punt returns, second in the Big 12. He is fourth on MU’s all-time reception list with 127.

MID-MISSOURI MAVERICKS: The Mavericks acquired outfielder Eli Albertson from the Fort Worth Cats of the Central Baseball League. Albertson appeared in 69 games for Fort Worth in 2004, batting .264 with five home runs and 30 RBI.

In exchange for Albertson, the Mavericks gave up first baseman Blake Blase, a Hickman graduate. Blase, a 13th-round pick by the New York Yankees in 2002, hit .250 with 17 home runs and 58 RBI in 90 games for Mid-Missouri.

MU MEN”S GOLF: Bud Reynolds of Knoxville, Tenn. signed a national letter of intent to play at MU next year.

Reynolds is the third Tennessean to sign in coach Mark Leroux’s first recruiting class. All three are ranked in the top 100 in the Golfweek/Titleist Junior Rankings.

“Bud has excellent mechanics, and has been really consistent the last two years,” Leroux said in a press release.

HICKMAN WRESTLING: The Kewpies lost a meet to Helias 46-22 on Tuesday. Five wrestlers won for Hickman (0-3).

Jacob Thornton won his 103-pound match 11-1, Tony Pescaglia won by forfeit at 119 pounds, Korey Skala was a 7-4 victor at 135, Zach Arnold won 6-4 in overtime at 189, and Tim Temple pinned his opponent at 275.
