An MU football player was charged with rape and sodomy Monday.
After a female student at the university accused him of assaulting her early Sunday morning, Alvin D. Newhouse, 19, was charged of forcible rape and forcible sodomy.
The team suspended Newhouse indefinitely, which is its policy for players charged with felonies.
At about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, a woman approached MU police to report being assaulted, MU Police Capt. Brian Weimer said.
According to a probable cause statement written by MU Police Det. Christopher Papineau, the woman said she was walking down a hallway in Graham Hall, a university residence hall, at about 4 a.m. Sunday when a man began to talk with her. She said the man “forced her into his room,” locked the door and would not allow her to leave. She said the man then threw her on a bed and sexually assaulted her.
According to the probable cause statement, the woman identified Newhouse in a photo lineup.
MU police arrested Newhouse at 1:35 Monday morning, Weimer said.
Associate Circuit Judge Jodie Asel scheduled a preliminary hearing for Jan. 5 said Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Richard B. Hicks.
Newhouse is being held on $30,000 bond for each charge, and his bond also requires that he not contact the accuser or be at the residence hall.
Newhouse’s attorney Pat Eng could not be reached for comment.
“We are aware of the situation and, obviously, this is a very serious matter,” MU football coach Gary Pinkel said in a statement released Monday afternoon. “As such, in accordance with university policy, Alvin has been suspended indefinitely from the program. We’ll be supportive of the legal process as it plays out, and if there are any further decisions to be made, they’ll be made in the future as appropriate.”
A redshirt freshman, Newhouse, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound tailback/linebacker, is a native of Dallas.
An MU athletic department player biography says Newhouse was considered one of the top-100 recruits in Texas at South Oak Cliff High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society.
He is the nephew of former Dallas Cowboys fullback Robert Newhouse. The biography said he plans to pursue a degree in accounting.
