During the 2003-04 New Year’s Holiday, the Missouri Highway Patrol reported 1,839 traffic accidents statewide, with 12 people killed and 762 injured. Fourteen percent of the fatal accidents were alcohol related and 7.7 percent of all accidents involved alcohol.

In Boone County, there were 40 accidents during the 2003-04 New Year’s holiday that injured 11.

“People make choices. They choose to drink and they choose to drive,” said Capt. Chris Ricks, public information director for the Missouri Highway Patrol. “Anything that keeps them from drinking and driving we are in favor of.”

Some local hotels provide a venue for celebrating on New Year’s Eve that can eliminate traveling. The packages typically provide a place to party and a place to crash afterwards.

“I think it is an excellent way to celebrate if you do plan on drinking,” said Capt. Zim Schwartze of the Columbia Police Department. “It is a good idea that people are planning responsibly,”

Ed Baker, executive vice president of Executive Hotel Management, said the packages are a way to celebrate without the work.

“You don’t have to clean up, cook anything or even make the bed,” Baker said.
