ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Rams on Monday hired Kurt Schottenheimer as their new secondary coach.
Schottenheimer replaces Perry Fewell, who left the Rams last week to work for the Chicago Bears. That move reunited Fewell with Bears coach Lovie Smith, who was the Rams’ defensive coordinator from 2001 to 2003. Fewell joined the Rams in 2003 after spending the previous five seasons coaching defensive backs in Jacksonville.
Schottenheimer served as defensive backs coach for Green Bay last season. Before that, he worked as a defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions from 2002-2003, for the Washington Redskins in 2001 and for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1999-2000.
He served as the Chiefs’ defensive backs coach from 1995-98 and their special teams coach from 1989-94. His first NFL position was as special teams coach for the Cleveland Browns from 1987-1988.
