Rock Bridge High School is going beyond recognizing its current students by accepting nominations for the Rock Bridge Alumni Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame was started in 2003 to honor alumni who have “made exceptional accomplishments in their personal and professional careers,” said Assistant Principal Kathy Ritter.
Nine alumni have been inducted, and the school plans to add five inductees this fall. Applications will be accepted through Feb. 11 and should consist of a two-page nomination form that details the graduate’s background and his or her accomplishments. However, if this information is unknown, the nominator can call in and give the graduate’s name and the school will find the required information.
A committee of nine community members with Rock Bridge ties will meet once or twice in early spring to review the nominations. Wayne Walker, who served as Rock Bridge’s principal since its opening in 1973 until 1992, will be on the selection committee for the third time.
“(Nominees) don’t have to have gone on to be president. We look at community service, accomplishments and events they may have overcome. We don’t look at their record while at Rock Bridge High School, we look at their record after Rock Bridge, thinking we had something to do with that,” Walker said.
Having been at Rock Bridge for almost 20 years, Walker recognizes many of the nominees. Seeing some of the names and their accomplishments has Walker “pleasantly surprised. Others, I wasn’t surprised to see at all.”
Those accepted into the Hall of Fame are notified in early summer and inducted during Homecoming week in the fall, when they receive a glass plaque. Inductees have come for the ceremony from as far away as Denmark.
“They are generally very excited and still have family here, so they tie that in to their trip back (to Columbia),” Ritter said.
