If you’ve ever seen a show at MU’s Jesse Auditorium, you might have an idea of what’s happening on stage. But even more is happening behind the scenes. Melissa Brown, an events assistant for Jesse Auditorium, has been working backstage since shortly after she moved here eight years ago.

“My job involves lighting, sound and stage work,” Brown said. “I do the same thing at the Hearnes Center and the Mizzou Arena.”

Brown, who applied for the job after seeing an ad in the paper, is enthusiastic about her profession and hopes to stay in the field.

“I like it — I like working in live productions and seeing the entire process of a show and everything it takes to put on, as opposed to just seeing what’s on stage,” she said.

When she’s not working, Brown enjoys doing anything outdoors, such as fishing, hiking, camping or road trips.

“One of my favorite places in Columbia is Rock Bridge State Park — but I also really like the bars here, too,” Brown said, grinning.
