Interim public works director is appointed

Chief Engineer John Glascock has been named interim public works director, temporarily filling a slot left open by the retirement of 19-year veteran Lowell Patterson.

City Manager Ray Beck made the announcement on Thursday. Glascock has worked with the city for about two years and previously served in several engineering and administrative capacities at the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The Public Works Department oversees several city operations, including its parking, recycling, refuse collection, sewer and storm-water utilities; streets and sidewalks; the city bus service; fleet maintenance; building inspections; and Columbia Regional Airport.

Beck said in a news release that his office would assist Glascock as necessary.

Meanwhile, a screening committee of citizens and staff will review applications for Patterson’s permanent replacement.
