Several central Columbia residents reported gunfire near Banks Avenue and Duncan Street on Monday night, but police said some witnesses are reluctant to talk.

“We have witnesses saying they heard shots, but we’re having problems with victims saying they were shot at,” Columbia police Capt. Brad Nelson said. “It might be because they were willing participants shooting at each other.”

Police said they received several 911 calls about the shots near Banks Avenue and Duncan Street around 11:45 p.m. Monday. One caller said someone she knew shot at her brother; witnesses said the shooting started after a fight between a man and woman.

Officers searched the area and found neither a suspect nor evidence of a shooting, Sgt. Roger Allen said in a news release.

The case has been turned over the department’s Major Crimes Unit.
