Mayor Darwin Hindman will release the names of the five finalists for city manager during a news conference at 9 a.m. today at the Daniel Boone City Building.
The Columbia City Council pared its list of candidates to five about two weeks ago, but the city refrained from releasing their names after one person asked to remain unidentified until after a Tuesday election in his or her city.
The council is looking for a replacement for Ray Beck, who is scheduled to retire around the end of the year after 20 years as city manager.
Today’s news conference will be aired live on the Columbia Channel, which broadcasts on Channel 2 for Charter Communications customers and on Channel 13 for Mediacom customers.
The candidates will hold a news conference from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Friday in the Boone Building’s mezzanine conference room. They will also participate in a community forum from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers.
Although the public will not be able to question candidates directly at the forum, moderators Rod Gelatt and Jo Sapp will ask questions selected from those submitted by the public over the past several days. Residents can continue to submit questions through noon Thursday on the city’s Web site, www.GoColumbiaMo.com, or by calling 817-6400.
The council will hold a series of closed meetings and interviews through the weekend and could name Beck’s successor as early as Sunday.
