In what neighbors said appeared to be a drive-by shooting, a man was shot near the corner of Rogers Street and Circus Avenue on Wednesday night.
Witnesses said they heard shots fired around 9 p.m., and then saw a dark sedan speed away from the scene.
Neighbors said the unidentified victim, a resident of the 400 block of Circus Avenue, appeared to have been shot in the upper leg.
Police said they had no leads, but were in the process of interviewing witnesses, including the victim’s family.
Skip Harvey, who lives across the street from the victim, said he heard between five and eight shots and ran out to his porch to see what had happened. He said it appeared the shooter fired from a dark sedan into another car parked on the street. The sedan then pealed out and drove west, away from the scene. Harvey said he then saw a man standing in the street clutching his leg. The victim’s family came out of his house and drove him to the hospital.
Police, who had blocked off the scene, said they were in the process of investigating the scene.
The victim’s condition is unknown, though Harvey said the victim appeared to be in relatively good condition at the scene.
Columbia police Capt. Zim Schwartze is in charge of the investigation.
“I’m familiar with the victim,” Schwartze said. “It’s going to take more than a few bullets to keep him down.”
