Couple files lawsuit after police search

The city of Columbia denied allegations Wednesday that two Columbia police officers violated a Columbia couple’s civil rights by assaulting them and searching their apartment without a warrant.

In response to a lawsuit Christopher and Paula Lee filed July 13 in the Central division of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri, the city denied all allegations of wrongdoing and asked that the court dismiss the suit. The Lees said Officers Nathan Baer and Scott Decker assaulted them after responding to a domestic disturbance complaint called in by the Lees’ neighbor. The couple’s attorney, Stephen Wyse, said Christopher Lee was punched and kicked by the officers after Lee asked if they had a warrant.

The couple is suing for compensation for emotional trauma, medical expenses and court costs, but are not asking for a specific amount of money.

The city’s attorney could not be reached for comment Friday.
