A Columbia man pleaded not guilty Monday in the 13th Circuit Court to a charge of sexual assault.

Columbia police said in a probable cause statement that Daniel W. Coffmann, 45, raped a woman in Lions-Stephens Park in July. The woman, who was sleeping under a shelter in the park, said a man whom she knew began rubbing her back. When she told him to stop, the man climbed on top of her and raped her, police said in the statement.

Police arrested Coffmann after the woman identified him as the assailant in a photo line-up.

Coffmann admitted he had sex with the woman but said it was consensual, according to the probable cause statement.

Coffmann was being held in the Boone County Jail Monday evening in lieu of $100,000 bond. He faces up to ten years imprisonment.
