Susan Williams’ third-grade class at Grant Elementary wrote essays exploring Columbia’s future. Here’s what the students would like to retain and change in their city, written in their own words:
In the future Columbia shuold have less builtings. I feel this way because animals are losing thir homes. This is important to me because animals are living things like us and its not fair for them.

We need a walking mall! Water in schools for the cafiteria!!!
If your howse gets a natral dasaster you get all your mony you lost back. People need to clear sidewalks. There should be a sidewalk clearing club.
There should be more small parks and trails.
We need usndergrond parking.
Luc Goldstein, 9
I think we need a fun center. It should have sports fields, arcade, workout (for kids), play place. Grant needs more space for playground. We should use that space for kickball. We need a orgizanation that takes poor families/people and gives them a home. And a orgizanation that before people cut down trees they get the animals out. We need another mall because the mall we already have is always busy when I go.
Caroline Bocklage, 9
I think that there should be no smoking execpt for on your own property. I also think that Columbia should have a zoo. Another thing that will probably not happen is I think our city should be underground. And we should only have one Wal-Mart. We should also have more solar-powered cars. If that doesn’t happen, we should have less cars like Hummers. And gas prices should be lower.
Kaya Nies, 8
I think that we should take a break from hunting and ban guns, swords and daggers. You can use knifes but only to slice food. The police can have guns though. Were the country that eats the most meat anyway.
Columbia needs more exercising places for kids to exercise, keep fit and do sports they like doing.
Smoking shouldn’t be allowed at all in Columbia accept on your property (unless your the president unless its on white house lawn) otherwise your arested.
Columbia should keep the exercising places.
In the future I think they should have sound proof buildings and windows so kids can study in silence.
Ben Goodfellow, 9
I think in the future they should make unbreakable domes that could fold up. I hope they are simple to find like at Wal-Mart or at Target. Or you should give them out to people who don’t or had an accident with their house. If you bought one it would cost about $201.
Macaulay Keevins, 9
I think there should be homes if peoples homes get burned down. I also think that there should not be cracks in the sidwalks. There should be more high schools. There should be more police ofessers to wach for speeders by schools. There should also be more parking downtown.
Katherine Hammond, 9
In Columbia I like how we have the MKT trail running through town. I think we should get a national airport instead of a regional one. I know we can’t have an international airport because we don’t have customs. I think more places should be open for kids to work out in. I was frustrated this fall when I was looking for a place to train for the Race For Sight Aquathalon over the winter but to my dismay I found none unless I joined a swim team. I think we should have more parks and recreation though I think Parks and Recreation does a phenomenal job with that.
I also think that they should stop tearing down old schools. I think they also should not turn the older schools into district offices. I go to the oldest school in town and I want the children younger than me to experience old schools too. The school I go to is U.S. Grant Elementary School. I think people should keep old schools because of the history they have. Also Grant is a historic property and that’s just wrong to tear down a historic property.
Tate Cooper, 9
I would want to have only smoking in homes. More wildlife things. Undergrond tunls for cars so we can have more wildlife. Soler-panals should be used a lot. Agenst the lawe to polut.
Sarah Meadows, 10
I want more Hobytown USAs. A under water subway.
