Openings abound on county boards

COLUMBIA — If you want to get involved in county government, here’s your chance. The following Boone County boards and commissions have positions open. Applications are accepted until the positions are filled.

Board of Equalization: This board hears appeals of property tax assessments. It’s looking for people with experience as a real estate broker, appraiser, home builder, property developer, lending officer or real estate investor. Two positions are open; one is a two-year term, and the other a four-year term. Both positions will transfer to four-year terms.

Board of Adjustment: This six-member board reviews requests for exceptions to zoning and subdivision regulations. One position is open, and it expires in May 2011. Applicants can live in an unincorporated county area.

Board of Parks: This board makes recommendations about county parks. It is composed of representatives from each of Boone County’s 10 townships. Meetings are on the second Tuesday every other month. Positions are open for representatives from the following townships: Bourbon Township, with a term expiring in September 2009; Rocky Fork Township, with a term expiring in September 2008; Rock Bridge Township, with a term expiring in January 2011; Katy Township, with a term expiring in January 2011; and Three Creeks Township, with a term expiring in January 2011.

Building Code Board of Appeals: This 12-member board meets as needed to review requests for exceptions to building code regulations. Each of Boone County’s 10 townships are represented on the board. Applicants should have a background in architecture or construction. Two five-year positions representing Rock Bridge Township and Cedar Township are open. There’s also a position representing Missouri Township that expires in December 2011.

Building Code Commission: This nine-member board reviews county building codes and makes recommendations for updating them. It meets as needed and holds public hearings on proposed revisions. There are two positions open, one expires in October 2008 and the other in June 2009.

Judicial and Law Enforcement Task Force: This seven-member board creates long-term plans for the Boone County Jail, the Courthouse and the Sheriff’s Department. It meets monthly. Two three-year positions are open.

Mental Health Board of Trustees: This board consists of service providers, patients and their families, one physician and others who do not work in mental health care. There are two vacancies: One term, which expires in May 2010, is for a person outside mental health care. The other is for a mental health care consumer. That post expires in April 2012.

Columbia/Boone County Board of Health: This board meets as needed to advise the Boone County Commission and the Columbia City Council about public health and animal control. There is one position open that expires in 2010.

Road and Bridge Advisory Committee: This committee consists of the county Public Works director, a county commissioner, a representative of the Planning Department and representatives from each of the county’s 10 townships. There’s a seat open for Centralia Township that expires in June 2010 and another interim position for Missouri Township that expires in May 2010.

Senior Board: Anyone interested in senior citizen issues can apply to this board, which consists of 10 members, one from each township. It meets four times a year. Four positions are open: One for Missouri Township that expires in May 2011, one for Bourbon Township that expires in January 2010, one for Katy Township that expires in February 2011 and one for Rock Bridge Township that expires in May 2011.
