Jacob Hamilton's Profile
Education Reporter and Staff Photographer, Columbia Missourian
WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND?
I've aspired to be a newspaper staff photographer for most of my adult life. I've photographed for the Columbia Business-Times, Columbia Home Magazine, Jefferson City Magazine, VOX Magazine and the Columbia Missourian. There's a special place in my heart and mind for photography, but I'm interested in print and digital news in general, as well as magazine publications.
WHAT'S YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF WORK LIKE?
Outside of the Missourian, I enjoy rest, sleep and beard-grooming.
I'm also interested in personal photography projects, music and the outdoors. I've worked as a grocery store clerk, server at a free restaurant, horticulturalist, truck driver and chainsaw operator. I try to approach every new task as a challenge, and to learn from my mistakes rather than be intimidated by them.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COLUMBIA?
Columbia represents a compromise between my childhood home of Tulsa, Okla. and my permanent residence in Chicago, Ill. Like Tulsa, a few miles in any direction will transport me to an unfamiliar trail, park or river that I can explore to my heart's content. Like Chicago, the people I meet can represent any of a staggeringly diverse set of backgrounds, opinions and bastions of wisdom. I can walk from one favorite restaurant, music venue or favorite small business to the next, and there's no shortage of sources of entertainment.
As a bonus, the food is good, the gas is cheap, and the sunsets are gorgeous.
