WHAT DO YOU DO AT THE MISSOURIAN? I am a news editor on the Missourian's interactive copy desk. I work with students to edit copy and multimedia, optimize headlines for search engines and social media, and update ColumbiaMissourian.com.
WHAT KIND OF JOURNALISM KEEPS YOU GOING? My favorite journalism is about the community — whether it's a story of how people live their lives, a watchdog piece that holds local officials accountable, or a community conversation via social media. And I am excited about finding new ways to tell these stories. The digital world opens so many possibilities.
WHAT'S YOUR WORK AND EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND? I studied journalism at the University of Oregon and launched my journalism career as a copy editor and page designer at my hometown paper, the Statesman Journal in Salem, Ore. Copy editing has been my passion since I was a teenager — believe it or not — and I went on to work as a copy editor at the Asbury Park Press in New Jersey and most recently as a copy desk leader at The Journal News in Westchester County, N.Y. During college, I was a Dow Jones News Fund intern at The Arizona Republic.
WHAT'S YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF WORK LIKE? Much of my life is devoted to my 1-year-old daughter, who is constantly exploring the world around her. My husband and I enjoy restaurants, microbrews and good television (and some guilty-pleasure shows, as well).
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COLUMBIA? I love that it's a new adventure. Having lived on the West Coast and the East Coast, I haven't spent much time in "the middle." My family just moved here in August 2013, and there's so much I want to see and do.
