He became interested in newspapers as a young child growing up in Delaware along the Mid-Atlantic seaboard and came to the University of Missouri in 1973 to study journalism. He's been a working newsman in Columbia for the ensuing years, including stints at the Kansas City Star/Times and the Columbia Daily Tribune.
He began at MU in 2000, and in 2005 was named a William T. Kemper Fellow for Excellence in Teaching.
Other pursuits include gardening and music.
His wife, Karen Grindler, operates the Cedar Creek Therapeutic Riding Center for people with disabilities. They have a daughter, Katherine Schneller, who attends the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
