Shaina Cavazos's Profile
Shaina is a graduate student at the Missouri School of journalism. She graduated with her bachelor's degree in journalism and economics in December 2012 from MU. She originally hails from the northwest suburbs of Chicago.
During the summer, she reported for the business section at the Plain Dealer in Cleveland, OH. From August to December 2012, she reported for the education section, where she wrote a three-part series about the new Common Core State Standards in Columbia Public Schools.
Shaina was the assistant city editor for the education section from Aug. 2011 to May 2012. As an ACE, she worked with reporters to assign stories, edit stories and generally helped manage the newsroom. Her biggest project that year was planning and overseeing the Columbia Public Schools Board of Education election coverage.
Starting in January 2013, Shaina will be an assistant news editor at the Missourian, editing copy and designing pages for the online and print editions of the paper.
During her time at the Missourian, Shaina has been a copy editor, a member of the community outreach team and an education beat reporter.
When Shaina is not in the newsroom, she spends time with her equally journalism-obsessed friends, teaches Sunday School at Congregation Beth Shalom and gives tours of the Missouri School of Journalism. She also loves Chinese food, historical fiction, the X-Files, and baking the occasional challah.
