Andrew Joseph Lutz
COLUMBIA — Andrew Joseph Lutz was a late Christmas blessing to his family when he arrived on Dec. 27.
Andrew, who will be nicknamed Drew, came into the world at 8:35 p.m., weighing 8 pounds.
Although Drew missed making it in time for Christmas, he did arrive two weeks earlier than his Jan. 15 due date, said his mom, Maggie Lutz.
“I was measuring six to eight weeks early, but everything was going good,” Maggie Lutz said. “The doctor told me that it was ideal for him to arrive at 37 weeks, which would have been Christmas Day. Thankfully, he came later.”
Maggie Lutz, who works for State Farm Insurance, and her husband, Scott Lutz, a substation technician for the city, did not know if they were having a boy or girl but were prepared for the birth of their first child.
Scott Lutz painted the nursery in the same safari-themed, paint-by-number style that his father painted in his nursery when he was born.
“It’s kind of special to have the same room for Drew,” Maggie Lutz said.
Drew also came home from the hospital in the same outfit that his father came home in 31 years ago.
The Lutzes came up with their son’s name by using family members’ names. Both Scott Lutz and Maggie Lutz have uncles named Andrew and one of Scott Lutz’s grandfathers is named Andrew. Drew’s middle name, Joseph, is the name of Scott’s brother and other grandfather.
“It’s all been very exciting,” Maggie Lutz said. “My pregnancy was good, and everything was just very easy.”
Drew joins the family as the first grandchild on both sides of the family. His grandparents, Gary and Ruth Lutz of Columbia and Linda Ealey of Columbia and Ray Ealey of Fulton, were very excited for Drew’s arrival.
“He’s perfect, and Mom has been outstanding,” Scott Lutz said.
