Walking school bus

Columbia's Walking School Bus program is the largest in the country with more than 40 different walking routes at 10 elementary schools in the city. Volunteer coordinator Tyler Koch, 20, said West Boulevard Elementary School's program is unique because it provides three different methods of walking to school. School buses and parents can drop children off at the starting point or students can walk there if it's within one block of their homes. Although it is a way to save gasoline, Koch said the main purpose of the program is to encourage health and fitness among the students.
