The photos above show the difference between two Columbia overpasses. The College Avenue overpass, right, will serve as an example for the Providence Road overpass replacement in 2010.
Douglas McBride, left, crosses Providence Road between Park Avenue and East Worley Street on Friday. He said he doesn't use the pedestrian overpass, which does not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. "I'm lazy," he says. "I didn't want to climb up steps." On the right, pedestrians cross the College Avenue overpass on Friday. The overpass is easily visible from the road below, a fact that contributes to its overall safety.
