Taking it to the streets

The photos above show the difference between two Columbia overpasses. The College Avenue overpass, right, will serve as an example for the Providence Road overpass replacement in 2010.
On the left, the waist-high side walls of the overpass on Providence Road between Park Avenue and East Worley and Rogers streets block views from the road below, making people feel uneasy when they have to cross it at night.
On the right, Patrick Dyer, of Kansas City, rides his bike across the overpass on College Avenue while Andrew Cave, from Cherokee Village, Ark., enjoys a cigarette on Friday. The overpass will be used as an example because of its wheelchair access and its visibility from the road below.
