GRAPH: Columbia public high school enrollment trends

Columbia’s public school hierarchy will soon change from a four-tiered system to three-tiered system of elementary (grades 1-5), intermediate (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12). Freshmen will be integrated into high schools. With the opening of Muriel Williams Battle High School, each high school, with the exception of Douglass, will eventually have an average enrollment of 1,600 to 1,800 students. During Battle High’s first fully functioning year, there will most likely not be juniors or seniors there, as Columbia Public Schools will allow current students to graduate from the high school they are currently attending. For now, no boundaries have been set to designate which students will be attending Battle High. A committee will begin to develop district proposals sometime in January.
