A $430 million city budget for fiscal 2012 won the approval of the Columbia City Council on Monday. Work on the budget begins in late spring when the council identifies priorities for the coming year at its annual retreat. Under the city charter, the city manager is responsible for assembling and proposing a budget. City Manager Mike Matthes released the first draft of the budget in late July. Here are some highlights from the 542-page budget, which also is available on the city’s website at
The city budget includes a number of fee increases for rental inspections, utilities and recreational activities.
