Banned Books Week 2011 (Sept. 24 to Oct. 1) is the 30th annual celebration of the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Hundreds of books are banned or challenged in the U.S. each year. A banning is the removal of materials because of controversial content. A challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials from libraries, curricula or bookstores.
