In 2010, the poverty rate was 15.1 percent, representing the third consecutive yearly increase in the rate after a small decrease from 2006-07. Also, 46.2 million people were in poverty in 2010, up from 43.6 million in 2009, making it the fourth consecutive annual increase of the number of Americans in poverty. During recessions, or periods of economic stagnance, it is common for the rate and total number of people in poverty to increase. In November 2011, the U.S. Census Bureau announced that the number of people in poverty had climbed to 49 million.
