Avremi Lapine attaches a mezuzah, a small capsule containing handwritten scriptures, to his front door as his wife, Channy, and 9-month-old son, Mendel, watch. According to Jewish custom, a mezuzah should be attached to the right doorpost of every door. Because the Lapines' previous residence was an apartment in Brooklyn, N.Y., they had to buy 12 extra mezuzahs to outfit their new house in Columbia.
