DIAGRAM: How the new Doppler radar in St. Louis works
February 5, 2012 | 12:01 a.m. CSTThe National Weather Service in St. Louis is updating its Doppler radar system beginning Feb. 27. Current Doppler radars transmit and receive radio wave pulses horizontally while the new dual-polarization radars transmit and receive pulses both horizontally and vertically. Benefits include better estimates of the size, shape and varieties of precipitation in the atmosphere.
