DIAGRAM: How the new Doppler radar in St. Louis works

The National Weather Service in St. Louis is updating its Doppler radar system beginning Feb. 27. Current Doppler radars transmit and receive radio wave pulses horizontally while the new dual-polarization radars transmit and receive pulses both horizontally and vertically. Benefits include better estimates of the size, shape and varieties of precipitation in the atmosphere.
