Contra dancers descend on Columbia

Joe Groceman of St. Louis spins Rachel Byers of Cape Girardeau at a contra dancing session on Saturday at Stephens College's Kimball Ballroom. Contra dancing, which hinges on rotation of partners, often pairs longtime dancers, such as 15-year veteran Groceman, with new dancers, such as first-year dancer Byers.

Both novice and experienced contra dancers took part in the Mid-Missouri Traditional Dancer's 2012 Spring Breakdown at Stephens College's Kimball Ballroom on Saturday.

Caller Cis Hinkle guides contra dancers in their steps to the sounds of The Groovemongers of Rochester, N.Y., at Stephens College's Kimball Ballroom on Saturday. The dance is part of a three-day event organized by Mid-Missouri Traditional Dancers. Events continue into Sunday afternoon concluding with a brunch, waltz and farewell dance.
