Arborist Chad Herwald analyzes an elm tree July 2 in Lenoir Woods by touching its bark, as he tries to determine if there are insects, fungi or borers in the tree. After determining the heath condition of a tree, he will decide how it should be handled during the construction of a new underground transmission line.
