Two males in northwest Missouri who became severely ill after tick bites in 2009 have been identified as infected with a new sort of virus, now named “Heartland Virus,” according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These two men are the only humans known to have been infected so far, but William Nicholson, of the CDC, expects the virus might be wider in geographic distribution than has been reported.
