MU researchers have received a grant from the National Science Foundation to expand and test the concept of using motion sensors to monitor the elderly in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Sensors will be installed similar to the ones operating at Tiger Place, a retirement home in Columbia, and remotely monitor Iowa residents through fiber networking. The sensors include motion sensors, stove temperature sensors, vision sensors and fall sensors. These sensors can detect general activities in each room of the apartment and send instant signals to health care providers if a resident falls.
